The Road in Becoming a Lawyer
One of the most demanding jobs nowadays is that of a lawyer. Being a lawyer requires much time and “cerebral investment” in order for a lawyer to fight a case (and win it). Also, the baggage of being a lawyer includes having unwanted enemies and, for some, death threats. There are also moments that the pressure of handling various cases have taken its toll among lawyers – pressure from their clients to win the case, and pressure from the lawyers themselves for being the best they can be in handling cases. In other words, being a lawyer is not an easy job.
The road towards being a licensed lawyer is, however, harder compared to being a lawyer already. We are talking here about being still a law student, and the joys and sorrows in law school. We hear various stories about sacrifices and victories in law school, as well as the “crazy” stuffs one has to go through in order just to pass an exam. The following are some of the essential aspects of being in law school that each student should take into consideration:
Time. Time is very essential in law school. Because of the demands of the school, time management is a must. What we see in movies and read in books about students having no more personal life if in law school is quite true. One should be prepared in doing some sacrifices about personal and social stuffs for the sake of academic requirements. This, however, should not discourage aspiring law students. The key here is always time management. There is always time for everything if one is wise and disciplined in handling her/his time.
Strength. We are talking here about emotional strength rather than physical strength, although the latter is also needed in order for someone to survive law school. One has to be strong enough to take all the demands of law school. Assignments, cases and examinations can be draining; hence, one should be emotionally stable to handle these pressures. Failures and demerits are all just part of student’s life, and if one is not strong enough to accept these, then law school might not be a thing for you.
Budget. Books and other requirements in law school can be a pain in the pocket especially that there are some universities that require specific expensive law-related books. Also, law schools can be bit expensive; hence, a bigger budget is needed to pay the tuition and other requirements needed in the school.
Passion. Above everything else, a student should have the passion and drive to be in law school and, eventually, to become a lawyer. It is so hard to wake up everyday and do things that are not within your interest. Furthermore, it is a waste of time and effort studying in law school if one is really not interested to become a lawyer. Also, it is really different if the student really likes her/his craft because he/she becomes passionate about anything else related to her school. Law school will not just a serious home but also a place where she/he can have fun because she/he likes what she/he is doing.
Law school might be difficult. It might spell hardships and tons of sacrifices; but one should take into consideration that if one graduates from law school and becomes a full-fledged lawyer – all the sacrifices, tears and pains will pay off. If one will just endure until the very end, everything is worth it.
